Numerology is the traditional belief that numbers carry symbolic meaning, and that the numbers linked to your name and birth date reflect aspects of your personality. Of the various systems, Chaldean numerology is one of the oldest, and is known for its distinctive letter chart and its focus on the name you actually use day to day.
Our Chaldean Numerology Calculator works out your name number and its traditional meaning in seconds. This guide explains how the Chaldean system works and how it differs from other forms of numerology.
What is Chaldean numerology?
Chaldean numerology is named after the Chaldeans, an ancient people of Mesopotamia, in what is now southern Iraq, who were known for their study of astronomy and astrology. The system as it's used today was popularised in the early 20th century.
Its key features are:
- Letters are given values from 1 to 8 based on their sound and vibration, not their position in the alphabet.
- The number 9 isn't assigned to any letter, because it was considered sacred.
- Both the compound number (the full total) and the root number (reduced to a single digit) are considered meaningful.
- It traditionally uses the name you're best known by, rather than your full birth name.
The Chaldean letter chart
| Number | Letters |
|---|---|
| 1 | A, I, J, Q, Y |
| 2 | B, K, R |
| 3 | C, G, L, S |
| 4 | D, M, T |
| 5 | E, H, N, X |
| 6 | U, V, W |
| 7 | O, Z |
| 8 | F, P |
How to use the calculator (Chaldean Numerology Calculator)
- Enter the name you use every day, such as "Jane Smith".
- Optionally, add your date of birth to see your birth day number.
The calculator adds the letter values to give your compound number, reduces it to a root number, and shows the traditional meaning. It also shows the number for each part of your name, and your birth day number if you add a date.
A worked example
For the name Jane Smith:
- J (1) + A (1) + N (5) + E (5) = 12
- S (3) + M (4) + I (1) + T (4) + H (5) = 17
- Compound number: 12 + 17 = 29
- Root number: 2 + 9 = 11, then 1 + 1 = 2
So Jane Smith's name number is 29/2. In the Chaldean tradition, 2 is associated with cooperation, sensitivity and partnership, and linked with the Moon. Try your own name in the Chaldean Numerology Calculator.
Traditional meanings of the root numbers
| Number | Traditional associations | Linked with |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Leadership, independence, new beginnings | Sun |
| 2 | Cooperation, sensitivity, partnership | Moon |
| 3 | Creativity, expression, optimism | Jupiter |
| 4 | Structure, hard work, practicality | Uranus |
| 5 | Freedom, change, communication | Mercury |
| 6 | Harmony, responsibility, care | Venus |
| 7 | Reflection, intuition, spirituality | Neptune |
| 8 | Ambition, determination, success | Saturn |
| 9 | Compassion, idealism, completion | Mars |
Practitioners also give meanings to compound numbers from 10 upwards, which are said to add nuance to the root number.
Chaldean vs Pythagorean numerology
The more widely known Pythagorean system, named after the Greek mathematician, works differently:
| Chaldean | Pythagorean | |
|---|---|---|
| Letter values | 1 to 8, based on sound | 1 to 9, in alphabetical order |
| Number 9 | Not assigned to letters | Used |
| Name used | Name you're known by | Usually full birth name |
| Compound numbers | Important | Usually reduced |
Because the letter values differ, the same name often gives different numbers in each system.
The birth day number
In Chaldean numerology, the day of the month you were born is often given special importance, separate from your full birth date. For example, someone born on the 28th has a birth day number of 28, which reduces to 1. Add your date of birth to the calculator to see yours.
Using numerology thoughtfully
Many people enjoy numerology as a starting point for reflection or conversation, or simply out of curiosity. It's best treated as entertainment. Big decisions, such as choosing a business name, changing your name or making financial choices, should be based on practical considerations.
Calculating by hand
To calculate your number yourself, write out your name, write the Chaldean value under each letter using the chart, and add them up for each part of the name. Add the parts together for your compound number, then add the digits until you reach a single number.
Frequently asked questions
Should I use my full birth name?
Traditionally, Chaldean numerology uses the name you're most commonly known by, but many people calculate both.
Why isn't 9 assigned to any letter?
In the Chaldean tradition, 9 was regarded as sacred and complete, so it was kept separate from the letters.
Do nicknames count?
If it's the name you use most, practitioners often say yes.
Is numerology connected to astrology?
Both are traditional systems, and Chaldean numerology links each number with a planet. See our sun moon rising sign calculator.
