If you use your own vehicle for work, HMRC lets you receive a tax-free amount for each business mile. Our Mileage Calculator works out the allowance and any tax relief you can claim.
How to use the calculator (Mileage Calculator)
- Choose your vehicle.
- Enter your business miles for the tax year.
- If you take work colleagues with you, enter your passenger miles.
- Enter how much your employer pays per mile, or 0 if nothing.
HMRC approved mileage rates for 2026/27
| Vehicle | Rate per business mile |
|---|---|
| Cars and vans, first 10,000 miles | 55p |
| Cars and vans, over 10,000 miles | 25p |
| Motorcycles | 24p |
| Bicycles | 20p |
| Each work passenger | 5p |
How it works
- If your employer pays less than the approved rate, you can claim Mileage Allowance Relief on the difference.
- If they pay more, the extra is taxable and must be reported.
- If you're self-employed, you can use the same rates as simplified expenses instead of working out your actual costs.
A worked example
With the calculator's default settings, 12,000 business miles in a car:
- 10,000 × 55p = £5,500
- 2,000 × 25p = £500
- Total tax-free allowance: £6,000
If your employer pays nothing, you can claim relief on the whole £6,000, worth £1,200 to a basic-rate taxpayer.
Frequently asked questions
Does my commute count?
No. Travel between home and your permanent workplace isn't business travel.
How do I claim relief?
Through your Self Assessment tax return, or online on GOV.UK if you don't file one.
What about company cars?
Different rates apply, called advisory fuel rates. For your own car's fuel economy, use our Gas Mileage Calculator.
